Becoming an educator is a long process in and of itself, but becoming one in California is an even longer process.

Unlike many other states, California requires five years of higher education in order to become a teacher.

In California, the minimum education requirement for teacher certification is obtaining a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

However, you must also complete a teacher preparation program approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). An approved program requires both educational curriculum and fieldwork.

With California experiencing a teacher shortage after the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic, now is the time to get into the profession and secure a teaching career.

So, where can you go to earn your teaching credential in the Northstate? Well, we only have two four-year universities that offer these teaching credential programs: Chico State and Simpson University.

Here is a breakdown of what it costs to go to Chico State University to earn your teaching credentials.

FALL 2022 FEES:

  • 0-6 units: $3,049
  • 6+ units: $4,447

As you can see, the cost for taking under six units is $3,050, but if you are a full-time student that is taking over six units, it's a bit more pricey. Being a full-time student will cost you almost $4,500 in the credential program.

Now, here is a breakdown of what it costs to go to Simpson University for your credentials.

2022-2023 STUDENT COSTS | Credentials Paid per Credit:

  • $710 per credit
  • 18 units: $12,780
  • Plus a $200 deposit

With Simpson, it is a bit different as they are a private university, which means it will be more expensive to attend the school.

As you can see, the cost for Simpson's credential program is broken down per unit costing $710 per credit, which, if you are taking a full 18 credits, it would cost $12,780. They also require a $200 deposit for the program.
