REDDING, Calif — According to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, one man remains in critical condition after his brother shot him in self-defense Wednesday night.
Deputies responded at approximately 9:09 p.m. to the 21000 block of Squaw Grass Trail, in Bella Vista, regarding a family disturbance.
As deputies were responding, they were notified that shots had been fired.
When deputies arrived they found a man, identified as Joshua Snyder, 35, inside the open garage of the home. Deputies said Joshua was suffering from several gunshot wounds to his torso.
Medical staff arrived on scene and transported him to the hospital.
Deputies interviewed family members who were on scene who said Joshua brandished a pistol at his mother and had fired one round, which did not strike any of the people at the home.
Joshua's brother, who lives on the same property, encountered Joshua in the garage. The brother had armed himself with a firearm due to hearing the gunshot.
Officials say while Joshua and his brother were in the garage, Joshua pointed a pistol at his brother. A short time later, he advanced towards his brother and fearing that Joshua was going to shoot him, the brother fired several rounds at Joshua.
Deputies say the brother was not arrested as it appears he was acting in self-defense. Joshua remains in the hospital in critical condition.
Deputies added that criminal charges against Joshua are being sought in connection with the investigation.
