RED BLUFF, Calif. — 1,000 goats were chomping away Wednesday morning as they were released at theRed Bluff Recreation Area for ademonstration project to help reduce vegetation before wildfire season.
The Mendocino National Forest began the vegetation management project where Kiko Savanna cross goats from Blue Tent Farms, were released on a 100-acre recreation area.
Public Information Officer Punky Moore says thegoats will reduce vegetation in an undeveloped portion of the RBRA.
"Well as you can see the goats are eating the vegetation and that's exactly what we want to see happen. If there was a fire out here, a wildland fire, it would reduce the rate of spread and how fast that fire moves through this area," Moore said.
There is an electric fence surrounding the area to keep the goats in and safe in addition to guard dogs on the location. The public should be aware to not touch the fence.
Punky said the goats to be on the RBRA area for about a month and it will not affectpicnic areas, the boat ramp and thecampgrounds at the recreation area.
