SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — On Wednesday, we spoke with Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett. As we wind down our "Know your Candidate" series, on Friday, we heard from her opponent, Local Attorney Erik Jensen.
Jensen says what he calls 'government bureaucrats' have become too comfortable and complacent and that he offers a fresh perspective. He says one issue in the DA's office is a lack of transparency.
“Well, first of all, I’m not part of the problem," Jensen said. "You know, I think, in our county, there’s a long history of government bureaucrats who have grown comfortable and complacent; no longer concerned about the will of the people, but more concerned about padding pensions. I, like my opponent, have 20 years of experience in the law, as an attorney. The difference is that I’ve spent my time in the private industry, and in private history, you have to provide measurable results. And that’s precisely what I intend to do for the people of Shasta County.”
If elected, Jensen says he and his team would create local solutions to local problems. One program would empower people in Shasta County to rely more on themselves.
“A lot of the people that I talk to on the campaign trail express concern that if they were to protect their community or their person, or their property or their things, that they would find themselves sitting in a defendant’s chair in a courtroomand that’s not right," Jensen said. "We need to make sure that people feel comfortable, that they’re aware of the law, and they can defend themselves and their property without running afoul of the law.”
One campaign issue has been conviction statistics and how they're interpreted.
