SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — UPDATE, DEC. 28, 8:51 PM:Highway Patrol officials in the Redding area confirmed one person died in a crash on Highway 44 in the Millville area on Wednesday afternoon.
According to officials, the two-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 44 near Silver Bridge Road—roughly one mile east of Palo Cedro, Calif.—just after 2:10 p.m. They said an unidentified man, driving a 2000 Toyota Solara north on Silver Bridge, approached the intersection with Hwy 44 and came to a complete stop. At the same time, officials said 71-year-old Arthur John Howatt of Shingletown, Calif. drove a 2011 Jeep Cherokee east on Hwy 44 and approached the same intersection.
The CHP said the driver of the Toyota then entered the intersection directly in the path of Howatt's Cherokee and the two vehicles collided. Officials confirmed the driver of the Toyota sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Additionally, Howatt, and his passenger, 66-year-old Lori Nadine Howatt of Shingletown, both sustained moderate injuries and were transported to the Mercy Medical Center in Redding, Calif.
