CHICO, Calif. —
February means it's time for Black History Month. On Wednesday afternoon, there was a great celebration at Butte College.
The school’s UMOJA program put the event together, offering free food, music and networking events for students. Most importantly it was an opportunity to highlight great African-American figures featured prominently throughout the Butte College Campus Center.
“I think it’s important to remember where we came from and also where we’re going,” said UMOJA Program Coordinator Qia Smith. “Putting the types of events together lets people know that we are in unity."
Chico State is also hosting a black history month event Sunday on-campus. It's the first major black student event of the year as the Wildcats return for their first month back after winter break.
“I wanted to give our students of color an opportunity to shine,” said Chico State Admissions Specialist and Educational Opportunity Program Advisor Dominique Silva Soares. “I feel like what better time than black history month, to invite everybody no matter your race, or what have you, to come and celebrate, black leaders and our black students.”
The event will also honor the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
That event begins at 1 p.m. at Wildcat Plaza in front of the bobcat statue on campus this Sunday, and is free for all ages
