According to police, officers were dispatched to a shooting near the 1000 block of Columbus Avenue. Several callers reported that unknown suspect(s) fired multiple rounds from a moving vehicle before fleeing the area. Responding officers identified six victims at the scene who were struck by gunfire. With one victim refusing, five of the victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Stubbe was killed.
Chico police explained their timeline for releasing the victim's name, "Whenever a victim loses their life to criminal acts, the Chico Police Department is generally slow to publicly confirm the victim’s identity. First, to avoid potential misidentification, the victim’s identity must be accurately verified. Second, next of kin notification must be made, and family should be given time to grieve and personally notify other loved ones. Third, out of respect for the victim’s family, they should be extended the courtesy of official notification of our intent to release before we publicly confirm the identity."

In a statement from Stubbe's father, Joshua, he told KRCR, "Justina was a smart, funny, caring, beautiful 17-year-old who loved life and was always down for anything. She made friends wherever she went and everybody loved her. She was always making TikToks and doing her perfect makeup. She was extremely family oriented, always making it to family BBQs and birthday dinners, and always playing "Mama Hen" to her sisters, brother and little cousins. Her laugh was contagious. When she laughed, everyone laughed with her. Nothing prepares you for a loss like this. There is a hole in our hearts that will forever be a void. A beautiful soul that was taken too early due to unnecessary violence. The outpouring of support we have received, and continue to receive, from the community is astounding. We appreciate each and everyone of you who have reached out and offered us your condolences and who have donated to Justina's GoFundMe account. We will not rest until the monster who did this to our baby is caught and behind bards and justice is served. Thank you."
