CHICO, Calif. — UPDATE, SEPT. 13, 4:33 PM:
Police released new details on the crash and gas leak in a Chico neighborhood on Tuesday morning.
Officials with the Chico Police Department (CPD) said a two vehicles crashed near East First Avenue and Mildred Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The crash caused one of the vehilces to crash through a nearby home and cause a gas leak.
Officers responded to the area and quickly shut down the neighborhood. The road and nearby homes were all evacuated and the nearby Hooker Oak Elementary school was ordered to shelter in place. The evacuations and shelter order remained in place until crews with PG&E and the Chico Fire Department arrived on scene to shut off the gas.
The CPD said the home was severely damaged, however, nobody was injured during the incident.
Neither of the drivers involved were found to be impaired at the time of the crash, according to investigators.
Additionally, the CPD said parts of Mildred Avenue will be closed while PG&E crews work on the natural gas lines in the area.

UPDATE, 11:33 a.m.:
According to Chico Police, the road closure and shelter-in-place have been lifted following the gas leak on Mildred Ave.
CPD says a vehicle crashed into a home on Mildred Ave around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, causing a gas leak.
The immediate area was evacuated as the Chico Fire Department and PG&E worked to secure the gas leak.
The Chico Fire Department also put out a small fire in a BBQ caused by the collision.
Once the area was deemed safe, the road was reopened and people were allowed to return.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The identity of the driver has not been released. It is unknown is drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

ORIGINAL, 10:50 a.m.:
According to Chico Police Department (CPD), the East side of 1st Ave between Sherman and Arbutus Ave is shut down due to a gas leak in the area. Police say the gas leak was a result of a vehicle collision into a house.
People are being asked to avoid the area.
