CHICO, Calif. — Chico is getting its second cannabis dispensary.
Embarc Chico is opening its doors on 185 Cohasset Road. They welcomed their first group of customers during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. They're holding a soft-opening through April 19 with a grand opening to follow on April 20.
Embarc Founder & CEO Lauren Carpenter says it's been a longtime coming for the business.
"This community had a very thoughtful, and very deliberate, conversation about what legal cannabis would mean for the Chico community and they've been having that conversation for three or four years now. And so, we've really wanted to be a part of that conversation, having conversations with folks that were excited and folks who candidly weren't," Carpenter said. "We've made every effort to really make sure that the space we've created and the culture that our team is facility."
Under an agreement with the city, cannabis dispensaries will pay about 5% in fees toward future city projects. Embarc is also setting aside an additional 1% of gross receipts to a community investment funds managed by local stakeholders.
"One-hundred-percent of that money is for Chico, from Chico, and it will stay in Chico," she said.
