Chico, Calif.--- — the Chico school board met Wednesday night regarding student policy.
This comes after a lawsuit claims a local elementary school forced a child to change genders without parental knowledge.
Aurora Regino, who spoke during public comment, is suing Chico Unified School District.
She claims her then eleven-year-old daughter told a Sierra View Elementary school counselor she “felt like a boy”. Her daughter was then allegedly given a boy’s name and identity the same day, without her knowledge.
The case has sparked debate not only in Chico, but around the nation about parental rights and school guidelines.
Chico Unified board member Matt Tennis began the meeting decrying the "hundreds of thousands" of dollars spent by the district over the lawsuit, and that the board should come to a "middle ground" with Regino. Tennis pushed for the rights of the district to maintain transparency with parents regarding their students.
Congressman Doug LaMalfa, who also spoke at the meeting in favor of Regino, has introduced a Parental Bill of Rights act to give parents more access to information about their child's gender identity.
Dozens of Trans rights activists attended the meeting, voicing a concern for children's right to privacy and increased protections for LGBTQ+ students of all ages.
