The federal government could pay up to $1,000 to people who adopt wild horses. It's a new incentive program aimed at reducing overpopulation of wild horses.

According to the Bureau of Land Management, the goal of the program is to reduce recurring costs to care for unadopted and untrained wild horses and burros.

The Adoption Incentive Program allows qualified adopters to receive $500 within 60 days of adoption of an untrained wild horse or burro and then $500 within 60 days of titling the animal.

The adoption application cost is $25.

Thousands of wild horses are up for adoption across California, Oregon, Montana and the Midwest.

Locally, viewing opportunities are at theat the Double Devil Wild Horse Corrals in Alturas. Viewings are by appointment only on Wednesdays and Fridays every week and the first Saturday of every month.

They must be confirmed at least seven days in advance through the Modoc National Forestby emailing modoc_info@fs.fed.us or calling 530-233-8738.

Out of the thousands of horses across the states in need of adoption, the BLM says they are also expecting a lot of foals to be born in holding this spring.
