REDDING, Calif. — Hundreds of families were thankful for the Good News Rescue Mission on Friday night, Nov. 18.
The mission handed out about 400 frozen turkeys with all the trimmings for Thanksgiving meals next Thursday.
It was bumper-to-bumper for the drive-through food giveaway at the mission. Families signed up beforehand for specific periods; to avoid letting the line get too long and it all seemed to be working smoothly.
Bags were being loaded with canned goods and bread to be handed out to drivers with the frozen turkeys.
Executive Director Jonathan Anderson says this is just what the mission does.
“We don’t just support the people who are without a home in the community, there’s a lot of people who have homes but they need that support; they need that assistance. And so, this is a great way for our community to support everybody who’s in need during the holiday," explained Jonathan. "So, we do it to build relationships and make sure people are able to have a nice, healthy meal with their full family during the holiday.”
Like Brenda Crow, and her family, who said it means a lot.
“It means that we can have a nice Thanksgiving dinner on the compliments of the Good News Rescue Mission and the generosity of our community," Brenda told KRCR's Mike Mangas.
"Is this something you wouldn't have been able to do without the help of the mission?" Mike asked Brenda.
"No," she replied. "We have to have Thanksgiving. And, with this, my family, and other families, can eat and enjoy the goodness and the blessing of Thanksgiving."
And there will be a Thanksgiving Banquet in the mission dining room and chapel on Wed., Nov. 23, for anyone who shows up.
