BURNEY, Calif. — A group of teens were arrested on Monday following a string of vandalisms across Burney that totaled around $36,000 in damages, according to officials.
On Monday morning, March 27, the Shasta County Sheriff's Office said their deputies responded to reports of vandalism at several business and residential locations in Burney, including Mike's Automotive & Transmission at 37080 Highway 299 East, the Solid Rock Foursquare Church at 20343 Tamarack Avenue and 20328 Pine Street, the Shascade Intermountain Services building at 37009 Highway 299 East, an occupied travel trailer and a vacant home on the 20000 block of Cedar Street.
The SCSO said their deputies obtained security footage from the automotive shop which showed a group of teens at the location at around 3 a.m. on Monday morning. Through their investigation, deputies were able to identify one of the suspected juveniles.
Deputies later contacted the teen at his house and he was reportedly still wearing the same clothes seen on the automotive' s security camera. The SCSO said their deputies identified the other four teens, all aged 12, 13, 14, 14 and 15.
The SCSO says the 12-year-old suspect was released to his parents and a case will be submitted to Juvenile Probation requesting criminal charges be filed. The other teens were arrested and transported to the Shasta County Juvenile Hall.
According to the SCSO, the Burney area has seen a rise in vandalisms to local businesses where additional unknown teens were suspected to be responsible. They said the community is frustrated over the increase in vandalisms taking place an the Sheriff's Office is continuing efforts to identify those responsible.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Office said installing security devices, such as cameras and lighting, can be both a deterrent to criminal activity and an asset to investigators in the event of an incident.
