Backcountry campers will be able to obtain permits online through Recreation.govstarting on Jan. 17, 2023.

The online system will be replacing the former paper-based system that required in-person registration. The National Parks online permit system is already in place across several of the nation's national parks.

Recreation.gov's online permit system offers several benefits for both rangers and park-goers.

Backcountry campers and hikers can expect an improvement in safety and communication. The online system improves effectiveness and the timeliness of communication with important safety info ranging from wildlife concerns to weather and fire hazards.

In 2021, The Dixie Fire shut down all access to the park for 3 months. The online permit system also provides park managers with better data on how to maintain the park's quality.

Numerous trails and areas were severely impacted by the Dixie fire in 2021 and the park is telling visitors the be prepared for burned area hazards on all trails within the Dixie Fire footprint.

Park rangers and staff are looking forward to the update for the permit system. “We are excited to make the process of getting a backcountry permit more convenient for our visitors,” said Lassen Volcanic Superintendent Jim Richardson.

“Replacing the outdated paper-based permit system improves safety, communication, and is a step forward in managing Lassen Volcanic for future generations. Visitors will be able to obtain a backcountry permit from their home, or even from their cell phone while on their way to the park,” he added.

According to Recreation.gov, the permit allows the holder and their group to overnight camp within the backcountry. There are no designated backcountry campsites or trail quotas in the park. Parkgoers will not need a permit for day hikes.

According to Lassen Volcanic National Park, The online permit system will come with a nonrefundable reservation fee of $6 per permit. An additional $5 per person, per trip, recreation fee will directly benefit Lassen Volcanic in managing and improving trails, providing wilderness patrols, and monitoring natural and cultural resources.

There are no fees for visitors 15 years old and younger. Visitors planning their overnight backcountry trips at Lassen Volcanic should know that there are unlimited permits available. Permits are only required for overnight stays.

You can get the new permits online at Recreation.gov or by downloading the app to your smartphone.
