DUNSMUIR, Calif. — A rare real photo postcard of Babe Ruth's legendary appearance in Siskiyou County is up for auction and is drawing a lot of interest from people online.
At last check, the bid for the card was at $16,255. You can check on the auction here.
The picture postcard was taken by local photographer Paul Standard on October 22, 1924 in Dunsmuir when Babe Ruth and New York Yankees teammate Bob Meusel's Barnstorming Tour stopped in the small town.
KRCR News Channel 7's Mike Mangas went up to Dunsmuir to speak with the "Town Historian", Ron McCloud, about the legendary visit.
"One of our local promoters, a guy by the name of Talmadge, Frank Talmadge, found out about this, and realized that they were going to be playing a ballgame in Portland and another one in San Francisco, and they would have to go through Dunsmuir, that's the only way they could get from point A to point B, so he got in touch with them somehow and suggested they stop off and play an exhibition game in Dunsmuir," said McCloud.
McCloud said $1,000 was raised to convince Babe Ruth to stop in the railroad town, where the iconic picture was taken in front of the grandstand. And all those years later, those grandstands still stand.
"It's the same grandstand that you'll see in the pictures of the game, and it's seen a lot of use for baseball games, football games, and community events, for a long time," said McCloud. "It's visible from the freeway so people are drawn to it and a lot of baseball fans come to look at it and see the marker that's out there."
The picture is being auctioned by Lelands Auction House and the auction closes on Friday, February 1.
