While the position of supervisors is technically non-partisan, Shasta County Board Member Kevin Crye's recall is being supported and opposed by fellow Republicans.

The committee to recall Kevin Crye, the Shasta County Citizens for Stable Governance, served its Intention to Recall papers last week. And, following that, Crye told KRCR the group is made of "liberal democrats against a conservative republican." Chair of the committee, and retired project manager of a global engineering firm, Tim Hill, is a Republican and says that's just not the case.

"This isn't about political parties, it's not about peoples' families, it's not about peoples' faith, this about someone's performance in a job that is horrible," Hill told KRCR's Mike Mangas on Tuesday. "I just can't understand what's going on. The decisions that are being made, the millions [of dollars] that are being wasted on a voting system, that is someone's vanity project, is ridiculous. That $3 million that they approved in the last meeting, Mike, that's just a down payment on this, we don't know how much it's going to cost."

However, the Chair of Shasta County Republican Central Committee, Dr. Danial Sloan, says the members of his committee who voted were unanimous in support of Supervisor Crye, saying, should he be recalled, under the new legislation, his replacement would be appointed by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Sloan says Crye's being targeted because he won the seat by a 90-vote margin.

"In their thinking, they just need to flip a few votes in order to succeed where the others had a greater majority. So it puts him in a position of being an easy-pickings, in terms of trying to recall. And, if there's enough smoke thrown out there, their hope is to have him recalled. But, then again, it puts us in a predicament to where the governor is coming in," Sloan explained. "Ongoing, in the future, if you're a conservative in California, and there's a recall, then a democrat, or somebody with views that may not match the people that are in that district, will be appointed instead of the local people. So, it's a big issue."

Supervisor Kevin Crye says he checked the voter registration of the people who signed the intent to recall petition: 65% Democrat, 13% Republican and 21% other.
