REDDING, Calif. — On Thursday, one man was shot and another was arrested for a shooting inside the Grocery Outlet off Churn Creek Road in Redding.
78-year-old local man, Ronald Pember, was identified as the shooter in the incident. As it turns out, this isn't the first time Pember has fired his gun at somebody in 2022.
In February, Pember and his son attempted to stop a robbery and the elder Pember ended up shooting the male suspect in the hand. That case was handled by the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.
KRCR spoke over the phone with RPD detectives involved in Thursday's shooting. They confirmed Pember's history. Pember was arrested Thursday for assault with a firearm, and he's since posted bail and been released from the county jail.
One of the detectives KRCR spoke to on Friday said Ron and the victim "never met each other before," and that this "was their first interaction."
"Is Pember claiming self-defense? " asked KRCR.
"We're not releasing that information at this time. He was a licensed CCW carrier," one detective said.
"Do you have any update on the victim and his condition?" asked KRCR.
"[He's] still in the hospital...he's in good, stable condition." a detective said.
RPD officials also admitted that their plate is full at the moment.
"We've got more irons in the fire than these two shootings. We're kind of drowning, right now—so to speak," said one detective. The other shooting RPD was alluding to is an officer-involved shooting on I-5 North.
RPD said Pember and the victim got into a verbal altercation inside the store prior to Pember pulling his handgun.
KRCR attempted to speak with Grocery Outlet employees who were present during the shooting. However, they declined to speak, citing company policy.
