The Chico Police Department is warning Chico residents of a scam attempt at several residences where scammers are pretending to be representatives of Chico PD.

Police were alerted Saturday to a scam attempt. According to police, the suspect called residents and identified themselves as a representative from the Chico Police Department.

The suspect would use different lines of questioning on each of the calls, including asking the residents aboutoutstanding warrants and other police-related questions to the respective resident. The suspect made no monetary requests during the phone calls.

Police also said the suspect was able to disguise their telephone number to have the caller ID reflect a number used by the Chico Police Department, known as "Caller ID Spoofing"- a common tactic used by scammers as an attempt to appear to be legitimate.

Chico Police wants to remind the public that they will not call anyone, a person, or a business, soliciting money. If you receive any similar calls and are concerned about their validity, please report the activity to the Chico Police Department at (530) 897-4900 or the law enforcement jurisdiction in which you live.
