SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — The chair of Shasta County's Board of Supervisors says he is willing to fight the state over anything he, and a majority of the board, find "unconstitutional."
Board Chair Patrick Jones has worked at the family gun store for decades. Not surprisingly, the Second Amendment of the United State's Constitution is dear to his heart. He plans to bring a resolution to the board meeting next Tuesday, Feb. 21, which says, in part, "No appointed or elected official, that works for the County of Shasta, will enforce any law that is unconstitutional with regards to the Second Amendment," Patrick told Mike during an interview on Tuesday. "As opposed to accepting court precedence, we're going to determine whether it's constitutional or not."
The Second Amendment, in its entirety, says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
"This is simply ratifying, with the current majority of the Board of Supervisors, that we understand the Second Amendment and we'll defend the rights of the people of Shasta County against overreach of the State of California. And, I think, [with] a lot of things this year, that's exactly what we'll be doing." Patrick explains, "For example, the State of California says we do not have the right to keep and bear arms and that's exactly what the Second Amendment says in its original intent. And we're going to go with the original intent instead of what the State of California says."
One of those coming soon would be to allow properly permitted county employees to bring firearms to work. Patrick says, right now, visitors to county property can carry a firearm, however, county employees cannot.
"It makes no sense and it's inconsistent and that's something we'd like fix. And that will come at a future meeting," Patrick told Mike.
Supervisors will meet again Tues., Feb. 21, at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Chambers on Court Street in Redding.
