FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) — A bride was killed and her groom was seriously injured on their wedding day when the golf cart they were in was hit from behind in South Carolina.
The Folly Beach Police Department said a vehicle rear-ended a golf cart on Friday at around 10 p.m. EST, killingSamantha Miller, 34, of Charlotte, North Carolina.
The couple was reportedly leaving their wedding reception at the time of the crash.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office on Monday said Miller died at the scene from blunt force injuries.
Her husband,Aric Hutchinson, along with two others, were hurt and are currently hospitalized.
Authorities said Jamie Lee Komoroski, 25, was driving the vehicle that hit the golf cart. She was the sole occupant, while the golf cart had four occupants.
Komoroski, who was not injured, was charged with three counts of felony DUI resulting in great bodily harm/death, as well as one count of reckless homicide. An investigation into the crash determined she was going 65 mph. at the time she struck the golf cart.
Now, a woman who said she is the groom's mother has started a GoFundMe account to help pay for the bride's funeral expenses and her son's medical care.
According to Annette Hutchinson, her son-in-law and grandson were escorting the couple from the wedding reception in a golf cart when they were struck from behind, causing it to travel more than 100 yards and roll several times.
She said her son has had one of two reconstruction surgeries and is suffering from multiple broken bones and a brain injury.
In the GoFundMe, Hutchinson said funds raised will go toward the bride's burial and medical costs for her son and his family.
As of Monday morning, the page has raised $61,385 of a $100,000 goal. Just a few hours later, the page surpassed the goal, at $118,990.
