WASHINGTON (TND) — The man who allegedly killed five people execution-style in Cleveland, Texas, remains at large as of Tuesday.
U.S. Border Patrol is on high alert in case the fugitive, identified by authorities as Mexican national Francisco Oropesa, attempts to flee to Mexico. According to ICE, U.S. immigration officials have deported Oropesa at least four times since 2009.
Former Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Mark Morgan, argues current Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas bears at least some responsibility for the deaths.
"This is the secretary that said being in the country illegally is not in itself grounds to actually remove someone," said Morgan. "So he wasn’t a priority. ICE, no one was looking for this guy even though law enforcement has reported being to his house before where he’d been shooting weapons."
Unlawful migration across the U.S. Southern border remains at historic highs. Migrant encounters for the first half of the fiscal year are already higher than the first half of the record-setting 2022 fiscal year, according to data from Customs and Border Protection.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre came under fire for claimingthat "when it comes to illegal migration, you’ve seen it come down by more than 90%."
Critics were quick to pile on. One Twitter user called it “Maybe the biggest lie from the White house podium so far this year.”
On Tuesday, Jean-Pierre clarifiedthat she was speaking to a specific program’s impact.
Former Trump Attorney General William Barr slammed Biden’s border policies during a recent interview with Armstrong Williams.
"Having an open border that’s beyond our control means a lot of undesirable people coming in ranging from terrorists to sexual predators to incorrigible criminals," said Barr.
The crisis at the border is expected to get worsen when Title 42 ends next week.
The Department of Defense announced on Tuesday they will deploy 1500 active duty troops to the Southern border to help manage the anticipated influx of migrants.
