BURBANK, Calif. (TND) — Disneyland in California announced its first-ever "After Dark: Pride Night" event just a few hours after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has been feuding with Disney for months, threatened to raise taxes, build a competing theme park or state prison next to Disney World in Orlando.
Disney released a tweet Monday announcing the special event shortly after DeSantis held a press conference calling Disney outfor "circumventing" Florida’s attempt to regain control of the self-governed territory surrounding its Orlando theme park.
DeSantis sought to appoint a board to oversee the special taxing district, but he argued Disney somehow "negotiated with themselves" to keep control and maintain their self-governing status which has provided the company extensive tax and other benefits.
The tweet announcing the Disneyland event is being seen by some as a jab at DeSantis, as the two have been on a warpath recently, particularly since the Florida governor passed a bill restricting young children from discussing sex and gender identity in school.
Disney launched an aggressive campaign against the bill, dubbed by Democrats as the "Don't Say Gay Bill," and in return, DeSantis moved to strip Disney of its special territory and the privileges it gave them.
You're a corporation based in Burbank, California, and you're going to martial your economic might to attack the parents of my state? We view that as a provocation, and we're going to fight back against that," DeSantis said, according to Politico.
The Disney Pride event will take place in mid-June and is a "separately ticketed eventwhich celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and allies," according to a press release published by Disney last week.
Not long after Disney's tweet announcing the first-ever"After Dark: Pride Night," DeSantis released a tweet of his own.
Disney's sloppy and futile attempt to subvert the will of the Legislature and Floridians was uncovered by our state oversight board and their 11th hour agreements will be nullified by the Legislature," DeSantis tweeted, alongside a picture of him speaking at his press conference earlier in the day. "Disney's corporate kingdom is over."
