Two Republican lawmakers in Tennessee filed a bill that would change the name of part of a road that's named for a civil rights leader and former congressman.

Instead, that portion near the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville would be named after former President Donald J. Trump.

Sen. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, Rep. Paul Sherrell, R-Sparta, sponsoredSB1407/HB1372 in the Tennessee General Assembly.

The bill would rename a portion of Rep. John Lewis Way in Nashville to President Donald Trump Boulevard.

The change would affect the portion of the road between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and James Robertson Parkway, near the State Capitol.

Rep. John Lewis participated in the Nashville sit-ins during the civil rights movement. He also served as a congressman from Georgia for more than 30 years, and died in 2020.

The bill has drawn some public criticism.

Nashville Councilwoman Zulfat Suara took to Twitter, Thursday night, writing,

OMG. I have to take a deep breath so as not to swear! What have [sic] this state become! Do some just wake up and propose the next thing that comes to mind. This is not how to govern. This is ridiculous. We are going to fight this. #GoodTrouble

On Friday, she called it "cruel."
