ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WJLA) — Rep. Steve Scalise appeared on the field Wednesday almost a year after a shooting attack during a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria in 2017.
On June 14, Scalise and four others were shot during a GOP practice for the annual charity Congressional Baseball Game in Washington, D.C. James T. Hodgkinson, the suspected shooter, opened fire on the victims at the field.
Several weeks after the shooting, the Louisiana Republican was readmitted to the Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital.
Hospital officials said Scalise's readmission to the hospital was based on concerns of an infection. He was listed in critical condition at the time.
In October 2017, Scalise returned to the House of Representatives months after the shooting. The House Majority Whip also threw out the first pitch before Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs.
According to the Associated Press, Hodgkinsonhad a piece of paper with the names of three lawmakers on it.
There were reportedly so many shots fired by Hodgkinson, that an FBI evidence team was still combing the grounds of the Alexandria ball field and surrounding park for evidence in 2017.
A van was found more than 100 yards from Hodgkinson’s position, and authorities said the 66-year-old had been living out of it. Inside the vehicle, a laptop, cellphone and camera were found. Investigators hoped the electronics would shed some light on Hodgkinson’s motive for the attack.
