SEATTLE -- A man stole a FedEx truck in Bellevue and took it on a dizzying ride across Lake Washington into Seattle, smashing into two vehicles as packages flew out the back door.
A FedEx driver had left the vehicle parked in Lincoln Square with the keys still in the ignition, according to Seth Tyler with Bellevue Police.
The thief jumped in the truck a short time late and took off down Bellevue Way, back door open.
"Packages were flying all over the road," Tyler said. "He was driving extremely recklessly."
The thief then headed onto I-90 West when a Bellevue police motorcycle officer spotted the truck and gave chase. The chase went across the I-90 Bridge and into Seattle, where the truck hit another vehicle, but kept on going, Tyler said.
"He was still driving extremely recklessly," he said.
The truck made its way into Pioneer Square where it ended up going the wrong way down First Avenue, which was closed for construction. Two construction workers barely got out of the way, Tyler said.
The thief eventually made it to the waterfront, where he was surrounded by Seattle Police officers in front of Colman Dock. He was eventually arrested and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of auto theft, hit-and-run, eluding police, and potentially driving under the influence, Tyler said.
"Fortunately no one was injured," Tyler said. "This guy was driving crazy."
Meanwhile, Bellevue Police are now working to track down the packages that were ejected from the truck during the getaway.
"If you picked up a package in Bellevue, Mercer Island or Seattle that you think might of fallen off a FedEx truck, we’d like to know about it, because it probably fell off a FedEx truck," Tyler said.
