FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine (WGME) — Multiple bison are on the loose in northern Maine for the second time this year.
Police say six bison escaped from a farm on Presque Isle Road in Fort Fairfield on Saturday.
On Monday, police say the owner of the bison was able to return one of the animals back to its pasture but there are still five bison on the loose in the Fort Fairfield area.
The bison have been spotted multiple times in several agricultural fields at various locations in the outskirts of Fort Fairfield.
Police say the animals are large, fast, and unpredictable so please do not approach them.
“We will continue to assist the owner of the animals as our ability allows and will update once the situation has been resolved. We are working with state officials and the farmer so that this does not continue to happen,” the Fort Fairfield Police Department said.
Several bison got loose in the Fort Fairfield and Presque Isle area in February as well.
Bison also escaped from a farm in the same area in March 2022.
