Gas station customers suspect water in gas caused their cars to sputter to a stop

SAN ANTONIO — Some gas station customers bought bad gas, leaving them with broken-down cars on Thursday morning.

The drivers say they bought gas at the Murphy USA gas station in the parking lot of a Walmart store on Austin Highway. Some added they didn't make it very far after filling up their gas tanks and they believe the gas they bought was watered down.

According to two customers we spoke with, their cars sputtered to a stop almost immediately after buying gas at the station.

"Mine started up and I made it here to the stop sign and about half ways in and it stalled and it wouldn’t go anymore," said Ann Kruger who put $26 worth of bad gas in her pickup truck.

Water in a gas tank can lead to hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in repairs. Owners had their cars towed to a mechanic.

The gas station reportedly closed off the area around the tanks and inspected the gas.

According to a representative with Murphy USA, the bad gas came from an early morning delivery from a third part supplier.

The company will be paying to fix the damaged cars and will provide rental cars for the impacted customers in the mean time.

The watered-down gas was removed from the tanks and replaced with fresh gasoline.
