CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — A nonprofit organization handed out 16,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children in need on Saturday.
Back to School Celebration of RI held twelve drives at schools and health centers across the state.
Partner organizations and state officials including Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza attended the drive at the Providence Community Health Center on Atwood Street.
The Cranston Police Department's Community Outreach helped during the drive at the city's YMCA on Park Avenue.
The department posted on social media that they assisted in handing out 500 backpacks.
