WESTPORT, Calif. — In an update released by both the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Wednesday morning, officials said three minors, in addition to the five people killed in Monday's deadly car accident, are unaccounted for. Authorities have also released the identities of all parties killed in the accident as well as the names of the missing juveniles.
The crash, which occurred on March 26 at around 4:16 p.m., killed at least five people, who were found dead on-scene, according to officials. The MCSO was dispatched the area of Juan Creek in Westport after a passerby used a pullout along the road and saw the vehicle upside down on the rocky shoreline over the embankment.
On March 27 at around 8 a.m., the sheriff's office confirmed the identities of the two adult females as Jennifer Hart and Sarah Hart, a married couple who previously lived in West Linn Oregon and had 6 adopted children.
After learning of three additional children who were unaccounted for, the sheriff's office, the CHP and the U.S. Coast Guard out of Fort Bragg immediately initiated a second search and rescue effort in the ocean waters where the accident occurred, officials said. The CHP launched a fixed-wing airplane and a helicopter, the Coast Guard launched a rescue boat in the area and the Mendocino County Sheriff's Search and Rescue scoured the beach areas along the highway.
According to the sheriff's office, one of the unaccounted for children is Devonte Hart, who drew wide media attention in 2014 after he was photographed hugging a Portland Oregon police sergeant during a demonstration related to the unrest in Ferguson, MO. The sheriff's office reported that it reached out to the Portland Oregon Police Department and learned the family, due to intense media coverage, may have moved from Oregon. The family was tracked to a Woodland Washington address where, with assistance from the Clark County Sheriff's Office, the family home was checked and the three outstanding children were not found, officials said. The MCSO was advised by the Clark County Sheriff's Office it appeared the family may have left for a temporary trip as there were many family belongings still in the home as well as a pet and some chickens, according to authorities.
On March 28, the three younger passengers who died in the crash were identified with the help of family members. They are 19-year-old Markis Hart, 14-year-old Jeremiah Hart and 14-year-old Abigail Hart. The three children who are still missing are 15-year-old Devonte Hart, 16-year-old Hannah Hart and 12-year-old Sierra Hart. The sheriff's office said at this time it is unknown if the missing children accompanied their parents on the trip to Mendocino County or if they might be staying with friends.
The Alameda County Sheriff's Office responded to assist the MCSO by sending six deputies trained in the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), used for search and rescue incidents, to assist with combing the coastline in an effort to locate the three missing children. So far the ocean conditions have not allowed the use of rescue or recovery divers in the search efforts, officials said. The MCSO said divers are on standby in case the ocean conditions improve.
The cause of this accident is being investigated by the CHP Ukiah Office. The MCSO is conducting the coroner's Investigation, ongoing search-and-rescue operations and the investigation related to the three children who are unaccounted for.
The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the California Highway Patrol, the Portland Oregon Police Department, the Clark County Washington Sheriff's Office, the Grant County South Dakota Sheriff's Office, the Huron City South Dakota Police Department, the Cowlitz County Department of Social Services, and the Alameda County California Sheriff's Office for their assistance in this case.
