Wednesday afternoon, local stakeholders met with officials from Crowley Wind Services at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka to hear the latest update in the offshore wind project coming to Humboldt Bay.

The event celebrated the wind energy company's official opening of its first West Coast office, which is located in the Carson Building in Eureka. There, employees will work on planning and permitting to ultimately begin construction of the marine terminal in Samoa, where the wind turbines will be built.

"Opening an office here, in Humboldt, continues to solidify that we want to be involved not only in the project, but the community as well," Vice President of Crowley Wind Services Jeff Andreini said.

District Four Supervisor Natalie Arroyo also spoke at the event, along with other local officials. Arroyo emphasized how significant Humboldt County will be in the future of offshore wind on the West Coast, which Crowley officials said they hope to expand.

"It will be a great opportunity for our port to expand and to meet the growing energy needs to assemble some of these components to actually build these offshore wind installations," Arroyo said.

Crowley Wind Services has stated it plans to hire locally for the construction and operation of the marine terminal. The company is currently in the process of hiring a director of projects, who will work out of the Eureka Office along with the team's recently-hired community outreach manager.

Andreini said he expects the Eureka-based employees will start work in the new office in June.

Construction of the marine terminal is not expected to begin until late 2024, according to Andreini, and the hope is to be operational at some point in 2027.
