EUREKA, Calif. — It's been six years since the murder of Humboldt State University David Josiah Lawson. His case remains open and his mother Charmaine is calling on the new District Attorney, Stacey Eads to get justice.
"I met with her back in December and asked her to review the case and she is reviewing the case. That's what we were told today. She would have an answer for us, probably in about three months," Charmaine said.
In May 2022, The Northstate's News spoke with then-candidate Stacey Eads about what she would do about the case if elected.
Leading up to the election at the time, Eads said, "As the district attorney, I will do an independent review of the evidence, take any of the advice and insight that perhaps might come our way from the Attorney General's office and how the case can be prosecuted if it can be prosecuted."
On Friday, Charmaine along with Black Lives Matter LA met with Eads.
In terms of the promise Eads made in May 2022, Charmaine said, "She better she better hold up her promise because there's enough evidence... to prosecute this case."
Shortly after David Josiah Lawson's death, Kyle Zoellner was named a suspect. In 2017, the judge, in that case, determined there was not enough evidence to bring the case to trial. Charmaine said the handling of the case and the DNA involved was botched but is still hoping Zoellner is prosecuted.
"Maggie Fleming, even with the evidence, decided not to press charges and file charges against a suspect that has harmed their loved one. So I hope that I hope DA Eads is different," Charmaine said. "To Kyle Zoellner, we're coming for you. We're coming for you. We will get justice for DJ."
We reached out to District Attorney Stacey Eads for a comment on our story but did not hear back in time. With Saturday being the six-year anniversary, a Run for Justice 5k will be held in his memory in Arcata.
